Session 26 — What Comes Back

Context

Everyone is in the castle. Logi came back through the library shelf at the end of his session 25 epilogue and nobody knows it. Taara, Mark, and Yager never physically left for Olvenka — the day reached them through Myra's showing, and they are still asleep where it took them. Vess is unconscious upstairs in her own body, the seam healed across her throat. Myra and Kyra are in the castle. The moon is full.

Yager's player was absent; he was run with the group and had an uneventful night.

The Library — Strahd Collects the Credit

Before anyone knew Logi was back, Strahd was already between the shelves. Logi had not taken three steps off the shelf he portaled onto.

Strahd told him what had actually happened at Ashenwood, and took credit for all of it. He knew the fight would break Logi. He knew Cinder would fall. He chose that moment because a man on his knees takes whatever is offered without asking a single question. The warmth that came up the Bloodspear was not the grandmother's lesson landing — it was the delivery on the contract.

"You did not put that fire out, Logi. Nobody ever has. You took it. That is what I sold you: not your wildfire back — the way to take the titan's flame for yourself. And you are carrying it now."

He said the rest of it plainly too: that he opened the way for the flame and the way stayed open, that where the fire burns his hand can reach, and that Logi carried it into his house himself. He mentioned Cinder — small, warm, exactly as remembered — and told Logi to think about what it means that he fed the titan's power into him all night to keep him standing. He did not explain "whatever he is these days."

Then he closed the account. One service, spent on the confession; the delivery made at Ashenwood; the contract discharged both ways and never to be invoked again. The written exceptions — Myra, Khione, Taara — went with it.

What Strahd did not tell him: that the fire cannot be put out. That came later, at the table, with a candle.

The scene was private. Nobody else saw him arrive.

The Waking — and Myra Inside It

Taara, Mark, and Yager woke in the castle before dawn, where the showing had left them, with the day still on them — dew in their clothes, wood-smoke in their hair, and every gift real in their pockets: the ribbon, the whetstone, the socks, the jam, and the clay jar sealed in wax, warm as a held hand. One day, three sleepers, all three remembering it down to the same five cards.

Myra was in it too. The mind-share she opened onto Taara carried her along, and she experienced the day from inside it. What she saw at the fire was not what she remembers: the reading laid out in front of her was the session 25 spread, not the one she sat through in session 4 — the two events linked, the past showing the newer cards. Then Madam Eva noticed her, told her she was not supposed to be there, and the mind-share ended on the spot.

So the disclosure question never had to be answered. Myra did not need to be told the new reading; she watched it laid. Nobody had to decide what to keep from her.

Taara knows Myra was in there with her. Mark and Yager do not.

After it broke, Myra told Taara one thing on her own initiative: that Taara had banished Logi. She noticed the change in Taara's attitude and named the cause. She did not tell her the memory had been taken from her — only that the act happened. Taara still does not know she was altered.

The Stairs

The Moon

Myra's cycle landed the same night, in Strahd's house, with the party asleep.

She transformed. Kyra was holding the Pendant of Nyss; the wolf slashed it out of her hands and took it. Then something in her registered that she had to be away from them — and she went out a window a hundred feet up. She misty stepped to the castle wall on the way down and took no damage from the fall.

On the wall she threw the pendant away from herself. She did not want to destroy it. Logi's summoned eagle caught it before it went into the dark.

The pendant came back to the castle intact.

The Reunion

The noise of Myra going out the window woke the castle, and the party came awake into it. That is where Logi was found — he had been back for hours and nobody had known.

The collision assembled itself: Taara had banished him on a forced confession and had no memory of doing it until Myra told her an hour earlier; she still believed he and Mark killed Vess; Mark — the actual blade, and now the man who had just been upstairs — was in the room; Myra knew all of it and had chosen what to say; Khione had the kitchen and had never been believed; and the standing command still bound Logi's mouth.

Nothing was resolved. Taara has the fact of the banishment now, from Myra, without the memory of it and without any explanation of where the memory went.

Khione's yellow butterfly stayed on her through all of it — one of Taara's swarm, come back on somebody else, refusing to leave, in front of Taara who cannot give a butterfly away. Khione used it: she named vermin and rabbits, and found them without difficulty. She read it as luck.

The Morning — Vess Leaves

Vess woke, and what got up was the stag. Ears gone, the seam still across its throat. It moved through Castle Ravenloft making the sound a stag makes and went out, past every person who had been arguing about how she died, and none of them stopped it.

Outside it reached the Pendant of Nyss — thrown off the wall by the wolf, caught by Logi's eagle, back in the castle by morning. On reaching it she changed again: into a fox.

Then she walked off. The party let her go.

Nobody said anything about the ears. Nobody asked what the stag was, where it was going, or whether it was her.

What she is, unsaid: the elf form is dead — the woman the party knew is not coming back. The stag is her true form, not a curse and not Strahd's doing. The fox is Nyss — her guardian and a relative — inhabiting her, reached through the pendant. None of this was explained. What the party has is a stag that walked out of the castle and a fox that walked away from it, and the woman they were arguing about is out of the valley with the pendant.

Breakfast

Strahd took breakfast with his guests and addressed the night point by point.

The moon. He raised Myra's night — the change, the window, the wall.

Logi's return. He acknowledged him at the table, in front of everyone.

The candle. He demonstrated what he had only asserted in the library. Logi lit a candle; Logi could not put it out. Strahd put it out. He did it in front of the whole table. That is how the party learned both halves at once — that Logi's fire does not go out, and that Strahd's hand reaches into it.

Vess. He raised her leaving, and turned it on Logi: why does he keep insisting he killed Vess, when Vess walked out of this house alive this morning? Logi, with the corpse gone from under the accusation, toned the confession down as far as the command let him.

Taara no longer knows what to believe.

The book. Strahd wrote what really happened. Writing it did to the table what the same instrument did to Taara's memory: it nearly moved everyone into a version of events in which Logi and Mark did kill Vess. It did not fully take, and it did not fully fail. It partly landed on Taara, Mark, and Yager.

The offer. Strahd stated that he wants to travel his lands with the party.

The session ended there, with the offer on the table and no answer given.

What Did Not Happen

• Strahd never offered Myra a room to change in. Nobody managed her moon night; she went out a window.
• Taara never said "follow me" to the stag. The compulsion did not fire.
• Myra did not report to Strahd at any point this session.
• The Jar of Kept Sun stayed sealed. Nobody opened it and nothing in the castle reacted to it.
• Nobody noticed the ears — not on the sleeping body, not on the stag.
